Medical Surveillance Programs

Medical surveillance refers to the conduct of health testing and the analysis of health information (and test results) which plays a vital role in monitoring worker health, preventing occupational diseases caused by hazards in the workplace, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

In Ontario, Medical Surveillance programs are specifically required for employers who use substances regulated under the Occupational Health & Safety Act and its Designated Substance Regulations.

Occu-Med provides mobile and on-site medical surveillance programs for employers, using mobile testing units and traveling nurses to conduct the required employee health testing right at the workplace, thus saving employers significant costs in downtime and employee time away from work.

Monitoring exposure levels to workplace hazards—such as chemicals, noise, or ergonomic risks—is crucial. This may include:

  • Environmental Monitoring: Measuring the concentration of hazardous substances in the workplace.
  • Biological Monitoring: Analyzing biological samples (e.g., blood, urine) to assess internal exposure levels and health effects.

Clients receive reports which include summaries of the findings and “Fit Letters” as required by the regulations. In all cases, our reports also comply with relevant privacy legislation like the Ontario Personal Health Information Privacy Act.

As the experts in this kind of medical testing, we can help clients identify what must be done, and on what schedule. Many family doctors, for example, are simply not familiar with the requirements of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and their regulations.
